Of all the changes in the last ten years in dog training, the introduction of puppy classes has perhaps been the greatest. Gone is the idea that you cannot train a puppy under the age of six months, as kind, fair and effective methods have now taken the country by storm. Equally important, has been the realisation that many, many behavioural problems can be prevented if puppies are given the opportunity to learn social skills, communication systems and basic manners as early as possible.
However, this does not mean to say that we can be blasé about the provision of such classes. Indeed, to teach owners and puppies of such a young age is a privilege and a huge responsibility. We owe it to both dogs and owners to offer the very best in canine education, using the most modern methods of training and a full understanding of how puppies - and people - learn!
The suggestions given in this booklet are intended to be just that - suggestions! They present a model to be tried, modified and adapted. All the sections are intended to be used as a practical resource - to be copied, handed out or used as a basis for your own ideas, but they are not intended to be definitive! Perhaps you might even consider sending us your methods, thoughts and ideas in order that the resources for other instructors grow and grow. The tide of dog training continues to turn, and the dogs will thank you for it.
Happy training!
